About Us
Who are we?
We are a Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the University of Houston (UH). Hence, we call ourselves ASCE UH. Established in 1953, ASCE UH is one of the hundreds of ASCE Student Chapters in the United States and around the world, all actively supporting students’ growth as future civil engineers, and making a difference in the civil engineering professional community right now, while still in college. Being part of a student community is just one of the many ASCE member benefits you can enjoy as you plan your next moves on the path to graduation.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create a welcoming environment that not only offers career opportunities and insight into the Civil Engineering profession, but also provide technical understanding through competitions, such as Concrete Canoe, and Concrete Bowling Ball. We provide a nurturing environment for aspiring civil engineers that encourages learning, community involvement, social and professional development, and teamwork.
WHY JOIN?
Professional Development
Professional Development
We host workshops on professional development topics throughout the year to help our members learn beyond the classroom. Workshops help with preparing for the career fair, interview tips, salary negotiations, etc. Â
Resume Fairs
Resume Fairs
Every semester, we host resume reviews to help our members provide feedback on their resume as well as to help them prepare for the engineering career fair.
General Meetings
General Meetings
On average we host 4-6 general meetings every semester. At our general meetings, we bring speakers from all over Houston to talk on issues important to the civil engineering field. Our members have a greater understanding of their career interests and opportunities from the knowledge they receive at our chapter meetings from industry professionals.Â
ASCE Competitions
ASCE Competitions
Every year in the Spring semester, we participate in the ASCEÂ Region 6 Student Symposium and Conference to compete with University teams from all across the State of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Mexico. In 2023, we will be participating in Concrete Canoe, Concrete Bowling Ball, Steel Bridge, and Concrete Frisbee competitions.
Field Trip
Field Trip
We provide opportunities for our members to see what it’s like to work in their fields of interest. In the past, we have provided tours of the NRG Stadium, and Construction of Parking Garage 6 and John M. O’Quinn Law Building at University of Houston.Â
